چکیده

Introduction: The burst of early work on the magnetism of the Apollo samples was followed by a quiescent period until recently. It had been thought that the strong magnetization in samples, whose ages ranged from approximately 3.65 to 3.9 Ga, was evidence of a lunar dynamo at that time. New results have yielded evidence for a possible early dynamo at ~4.2 Ga giving surface fields of the order of μT’s [1], a better understanding of Shock Remanent Magnetization [2] and new paleointensity determinations [3]. As recognized [3], to address the question of a lunar dynamo, it is essential to separate more convicingly effects of impact related shock magnetization and other contamination from any possible primary NRM recording a lunar dynamo field. The key to this work will be (1) the determination of the origin of the Natural Remanent Magnetization (NRM) by comparison of its demagnetization characteristics with those of the various possible origins of the magnetization and (2) classical paleointensity methods to obtain estimates of the ancient lunar surface fields.

Paleomagnetism of Pleistocene Sediments From Drill Hole OL-92, Owens Lake, California Reevaluation of Magnetic Excursions Using Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility

Magnetic Susceptibility) contains new anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data for selected samples from drill hole OL-92. The data were obtained from depth intervals that in earlier publications were interpreted to span several paleomagnetic excursions. Preliminary interpretation of the AMS results indicates that the high dispersion of the paleomagnetic directions within these interval...

Magnetism of a very young lunar glass

Recent paleomagnetic studies of Apollo samples have established that a core dynamo existed on the Moon from at least 4.2 to 3.56 billion years (Ga). Because there is no lunar dynamo today, a longstanding mystery has been the origin of magnetization in very young lunar samples (<~200million years old (Ma)). Possible sources of this magnetization include transient fields generated bymeteoroid imp...

Paleomagnetic directional groups and paleointensity from the flood basalt in the Tarim large igneous province: implications for eruption frequency

We present paleomagnetic secular variation and paleointensity from the Early Permian Tarim large igneous province, NW China. The studied sections comprise a total of ~400 m of basaltic flows. Paleomagnetic directions were determined for 11 flows. Four successive flows with a cumulative thickness of ~150 m showed a statistically identical paleomagnetic direction. Assuming a paleosecular variatio...

The Case Against an Early Lunar Dynamo Powered by Core Convection

Paleomagnetic analyses of lunar samples indicate that the Moon had a dynamo-generated magnetic field with ~50 μT surface field intensities between 3.85 and 3.56 Ga followed by a period of much lower (≤ ~5 μT) intensities that persisted beyond 2.5 Ga. However, we determine herein that there is insufficient energy associated with core convection—the process commonly recognized to generate long-li...
